Sketches of My Soul (Sketches #1)

By TC Booth

Genre: Contemporary

Age category: Young Adult

Release Date: June 20, 2017

Blurb:

In the game of life, I was used to being on the losing team. The odds were stacked against me. Tegan’s Team—a mom who tried to control me, a dad who would rather drink then spend time being a father, a lying ex-boyfriend, and fake friends. Like any team however, you have that one shining star that stood out above the rest. For me that star was Emily, my best friend.

I guess life had pity on me the day it gave me a friend that always had my back. Life must have felt extra giving the day it gave me a cheer leader—Mrs. White, my next-door neighbor. She’d been more of a parent to me growing up then my own parents.

And then there was Andrew. He was my shooting star. One that I never saw coming. One that I hoped became mine over the summer of my senior year.

A glimpse into a crystal ball couldn’t have prepared me for that summer, though. The summer where a letter from my mom rocked me to the core. I felt the world shake with every word I read in that letter. By the time I reached the end, my world split wide open swallowing me whole.

Excerpt:

  Sketches of My Soul

A faint sound of music seeped in my window. The melody called me out of bed. I pushed aside the curtains to peer out into the darkness. Andrew sat on Mrs. White’s porch swing and strummed his guitar under the soft glow of the porch light. His lips moved in song, though I couldn’t hear his voice. The distant sound of the guitar was all I caught. The temptation to throw up the window to take in more sound felt strong, but the fear that he’d notice felt even stronger.

Crouched below the window frame, hidden by the wall-space between it and floor, I cracked the window as gently as I could. It felt so lame, spying on “the boy next door.” The smooth velvet voice that sang “All of Me” made my stalking worth it, though. With my back against the wall, I hugged my knees, closed my eyes, and soaked in the words.

When the music stopped, I strained to listen for any sign of movement. After a few minutes of silence, I decided it would be safe to stand up. With the window safely shut, I started to tug the curtain back in place and sucked in my breath at the sight of Andrew standing on the porch. His eyes locked with mine. He grinned and wiggled his fingers in a playful wave.

My fingers returned the wave instinctively. Then realization hit me—there I stood, in front of the window with my Winnie-the-Pooh nightshirt on.

I flung the curtains shut and jumped for my bed but missed and landed on the floor with a thud. My elbow and knees burned from the friction of my collision with the carpet.

“Tegan? Are you okay?” My mom yelled from the hallway outside my door.

“Yes. I just slipped. I’m fine.” I couldn’t believe he’d seen me. He probably thought I was such a loser—spying on him from my bedroom window with a Winnie-the-Pooh nightshirt on. Embarrassment poured over me in buckets painting me red. No way would I go to Mallory’s party now.

Princess Adele’s Dragon Preview

Chapter 1

Princess Adele’s face paled when she heard the words of her brother. Her large green eyes stared at his face as she spoke. “Robert, it’s inhuman. You can’t do that. If the child were yours, what would you be thinking?”

“Look, Adele, I didn’t come to this decision without doing a lot of soul-searching. Do you not think I haven’t run this through my mind a million times? I don’t know any other way to keep our kingdom safe from that monster. The counselor told me it’s worked in the past.”

“I don’t care what your mighty counselor said. You can’t do this. There must be another way.” Princess Adele turned from her brother, the King, leaving him standing in the room alone. Her plan must be executed before the full moon.

How such a monster threatens her beautiful home is almost too much to comprehend. If only Anthony was here. He’d know what would be needed to stop this unthinkable act. Tears rolled down Adele’s cheeks as she thought of her beloved Anthony. She enjoyed the world one day, deep in despair the next. What happened? Why did he leave?

The Princess recovered her emotions and resolved to come up with another plan besides sacrificing a beautiful child to the creature. There ought to be another way. Arriving at her bedchamber, her lady’s maid waited for her.

As Adele entered her room, Miranda bowed “Your Highness”, she said.

“How many times do I need to tell you, Miranda, you do not bow to me and call me “Your Highness” every time I enter the room when we’re alone. We’ve been like sisters since the age of four.”

“I know, Adele, but if I don’t do it all the time, I may forget. If I call you, Adele in public His Majesty’s ogre of a counselor will behead me or something worse.”

“What’s worse than having your head chopped off?” Adele asked.

“Made to marry a man I do not love.” Miranda helped the Princess change into her sleeping gown to make her ready for bed.

“Robert has tried to marry me off too many times to count. Six years ago, before we married, Anthony ran away for some reason. ”

“You don’t believe that any more than I do, Adele,” With a soft voice Miranda said, he loved you more than life, and it showed in everything word and action he made. Changing the subject, what did the King say?”

“He plans to go through with the sacrifice on the night of the full moon, which is in two weeks.” Princess Adele’s covered her face with her hands as tears began to flow. Her voice trembled as she spoke. “I can’t sit here and do nothing. A child sacrifice is unconscionable to me.”

“What can a girl of your small stature do against a dragon? Many Knights died fighting that dragon. I can see you dead before you even get to the lair.”

Princess Adele climbed into bed. “You know I can do anything a man can. She stifled a yawn then said “Goodnight, my dear friend. I hope you sleep well,”

***

Miranda blew out the wick of the oil lamp and said, “Goodnight, Adele.” She turned with a big smile on her face and walked to the door to her room. I know what she’s going to do, and as soon as her death is confirmed, I’ll console the King. I’m in a fantastic position now to put our plan into action. I will be Queen of Valdoria! She smiled as she blew out the light and settled into her bed.

The door to Miranda’s room opened and closed without making a sound. She heard footsteps padding across the room. “Hello, my love,” Miranda whispered as she joyfully fell into a pair of strong arms.

***

She walked down the aisle to her beloved, Anthony. When she got close enough to take his hand, she slid backward, having to begin the journey down the aisle all over again. Adele experienced the same nightmare about her Anthony when she fell into a deep sleep. Tossing and turning, Princess Adele unable to sleep any longer, sat up in the bed. In the blackness of her room, she reached a decision. I know what I must do.

Without stars, the night sky displayed no brightness, only blackness as pitch. Adele hurried as she dressed in the boy’s clothes hidden in the straw of her mattress. Her secrets remained her own. Her adventures out of the castle before the sun came up, on many occasions, was known only to her. This adventure would be no different.

Her father made sure both of his children received the same education which she gave thanks for many times. She could fight with a sword and ride a horse as well as her brother. She bested her brother in their formal schooling. He wanted to play instead of educating himself. Robert began to apply himself to his education not long before their parent’s death. Adele’s impressive capabilities were known only to Robert. Her father wanted her skills kept a secret for the purpose of a surprise if she needed it. If something happened to her brother, Adele could run the kingdom.

If her quest failed, she would no longer be alive, and her brother would be alone. He would be the only one of the family left. Her parents, the King, and Queen died the previous year from the plague. She and her brother left the area until the crisis passed.

They returned home having no parents and the country, no King and Queen. Her nineteen-year-old brother became King and Lord Ashmore guided the new King in all decisions. They relied on Lord Ashmore as their father did, over the years.

***

In an inconspicuous manner, Adele walked down the long castle hallway to the secret exit that took her underground, straightway to the stables. She thought once again of her father and how he made sure she knew the secret entrance location. He told her no one knew about it except her, but if the need arose she could share it with her brother. So far, it remained her secret way out of the castle.

She lit a torch before entering the tunnel. She didn’t like the darkness of the tunnel. The dampness didn’t bother her at all, and it felt refreshing when the outside temperature got high.

The trap door opening in the stable storage room remained well hidden. She checked it every evening, so it remained unobstructed. At the bottom of the ladder, she pulled her sword from its storage area. She carried it as she climbed the ladder to the storage room.

After covering the floor with the rug to hide the entry, she made her way to Champion’s stall. “Hello, my darling. Are you ready for a ride?” The stable hand saddled the horse. She put the mufflers on Champion’s hooves so he wouldn’t make any noise walking across the stones. Adele waited for the guards to walk to the other side of the parapet so she could escape the castle grounds unseen. She didn’t wait long. When she felt it safe, she carefully walked Champion out the gate to the open field. Once on his back, she gave the horse his head and let him run across the field to the timber edge.

Amanda Lester and the Blue Peacocks’ Secret (Amanda Lester, Detective #4)

Genre: Mystery/ Detective/ Fantasy

Age category: Young Adult

Release Date: March 31, 2016

Blurb:

What does a dusty old secret have to do with peacocks?

Everything, as it turns out. When Amanda is knocked off her skateboard by a rare all-blue peacock, she learns that the species harbors a vital secret she must race to uncover. But before she can unravel the mystery, a startling archaeological discovery turns all of Britain against the detectives and threatens their very existence.

As old enemies gather strength and new adversaries emerge, Amanda finds herself dealing with hysterical teachers, a disappearing mentor, a mysterious poisoner, and a would-be magician. With so much at stake and so little time, the last thing she needs is to fall in love.

Amanda Lester and the Blue Peacocks’ Secret first Darktower class excerpt:

On Monday Amanda and her friends had their first class with the new logic teacher. It was a scary affair. The pirate was rude, strict, and humorless, and now he smelled like cigars. Probably drank grog too, by the look of him, Amanda thought, whatever that was.

The first thing Professor Darktower said, in a really loud voice, was, “Alice in Wonderland is not fun!” No introduction, no “Good morning,” nothing. The statement was so abrupt and the message so out of any context that every kid in the class dropped something, gasped, choked, or bit their tongue, even if they weren’t chewing. Then he said, “In this class we will read nothing but Lewis Carroll—Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, the whole shebang. These publications are no laughing matter. You think Tweedledum and Tweedledee are funny? The Mad Hatter is a joke? Alice is cute? BALDERDASH!”

This extremely loud exclamation caused poor Dreidel to fall off his chair and twist his knee. But Professor Darktower would not let him go to the nurse. “Detectives are not sissies,” he said. “You will stay here and learn to be absolutely, impeccably logical. Got that?”

The boy nodded up and down and attempted to hide his pain. It was obvious that he was hurt, though, because he kept grimacing every time he tried to move his leg. Amanda was so outraged that she refused to keep quiet. “He’s hurt. He needs medical attention.”

The huge man fixed her with a stony stare and said, “Then he’s out of my class. Do you think, missy, that when you’re out battling the likes of Blixus Moriarty you can take a time out and go to the nurse? Now stop acting like a girl and be a detective. And as for you, laddie, one more sissy incident like this and you’re out of my class. Got that?”

Dreidel nodded again but Amanda was furious. She opened her mouth to protest, but Ivy tugged on her sleeve and gave her a low “Uh uh,” and she realized that her revenge would have to wait. But revenge she would have, and it would be a doozy. The man was worse than a boor. Why, he was even ruder than an arch-criminal. Even Blixus had never been as bad as that. She wondered what Professor Darktower’s parents must be like to produce a son like him.

There was something she could do right then and there, however. She reached into her bag and surreptitiously texted Dreidel: “R U OK?” “Y,” the response came almost immediately. Of course he would say that. Dreidel was a trouper. And then it hit her that he hadn’t gone off to Skye after all. She was glad, not just because he’d stayed to support Legatum, but because he was a good guy and a great lab partner. She texted back a smiley and let it go for the time being.

Darktower glared at the class and said, “As I was saying, there are equations and syllogisms in these volumes that underlie every word, and we’re going to find them. You will be responsible for finding them. Then, for your term paper, you will be expected to arrange them in a different way that’s still logically valid and write the text they would produce. Is that clear? I repeat: this task is not humorous or fanciful. It is deadly serious work, and you won’t be able to build ironclad cases unless you can master it.”

The man made about as much sense as that strange page Amanda had found. Sometimes it was hard to understand Professor Ducey, but not like this. What did he mean, equations and syllogisms underlie every word? It sounded like he was saying that the books had been translated into English from math. You could read an equation out loud, of course, and you could translate it into Spanish or Chinese, but how could you—OMG. This was storytelling, just like the way she and Holmes had done when they’d put together the training film about a cyberforensics problem, except with math rather than words.

She glanced over at Holmes and found him looking at her and smiling. He’d got it too. He gave her a quick wink and then everything exploded.

“MR. Holmes!” bellowed the teacher. “Out, NOW!” Holmes looked astonished, then got up and walked out of the room. “MISS Lester!” the teacher continued. Amanda was surprised. “Oh, you thought I didn’t know who you were,” the man said. “I want you to take your things, find Mr. Holmes, and wait in my office. Is that clear?”

“But—” Amanda said.

“OUT!” he roared.

Amanda felt the strongest urge to stick her tongue out at him again, but she managed to control herself and abstained. She picked up her bag and followed Holmes out into the hall.

“What in the world was that?” he said when she’d caught up with him. He looked confused, as if he didn’t know quite what to do with himself.

“The man is a lunatic,” said Amanda. “He wants us to go to his office.”

“But the class just started,” said Holmes. “It will be fifty minutes.” Gosh, he looked good. His eyes seemed to be on fire. She looked away for a second.

“All I know is that’s what he said.”

He shook his head but he was smiling. “You know, the dumb thing is that up until he had his little meltdown, he was making sense.”

“You got that too?” she said, matching his grin.

“Of course. You taught me.”

“I did, didn’t I?” she said. She felt absolutely triumphant. It was a wonderful feeling after that ridiculous scene in the classroom. “Who needs him?”

“I guess we do,” said Holmes. “If we want to stay here.”

“You’re not thinking of going to Skye?” she said.

“Never. Not even for Professor Ducey.”

And then, instead of worrying or fuming or plotting revenge, the two of them cracked up so hard they had to hold their stomachs.

When they calmed down enough to speak, Holmes looked at her with mischief in his eyes and said, “You know what this means, don’t you?”

She threw back her head and laughed. “We have forty-five minutes to do whatever we want.”

“Come on,” he said. “Let’s go.”

Amanda Lester and the Blue Peacocks’ Secret peacock poop in the lab excerpt:

“Obviously we have to look at the page under the microscope,” Amanda said a few moments later. “That should be easy.”

She took the paper over to the nearest microscope and stuck it into the viewing area. Then she fitted her eye to the eyepiece and, “Whoa! I can see the fibers. They look like spaghetti that’s been cooked about a minute—really hard and straight. Here, take a look.”

Clive edged over and looked into the eyepiece. “You’re right. There’s something plastic about them.”

“Do you suppose there’s a plastic coating?” she said.

“Let’s see,” said Clive. He raced over to one of the many bookcases in the room and scanned the titles. “This one looks good,” he said, pulling out a gigantic green volume and placing it on a bench. He opened the book to the index, skimmed a couple of pages, and flipped to a bunch of pictures somewhere in the middle.

Amanda came over and looked at the book. “Hm, those pictures don’t look anything like what we’re seeing. Those fibers are natural and they look less regular than our page. All ours look the same.”

“Yep,” said Clive. “I think ours is plastic. Was there such a thing as plastic back when the Bible was created, though?”

“Let’s find out,” said Amanda.

She did a quick lookup on her phone and said, “Apparently Celluloid was invented back in the 1840s. It was patented in 1869 and 70 by some guy named John Wesley Hyatt. It’s a camphor-modified cellulose nitrate. They made billiard balls out of it. Film too. Ha! This is interesting. There was a big legal fight over who the true inventor was.”

“Could we be looking at Celluloid then?” said Clive. “The book was created about the time the school was, in 1887. That’s late enough.”

“Hm,” said Amanda, “I don’t think so. It says here that Celluloid is flammable. Our Bible is supposed to be virtually indestructible.”

“What do you mean ‘virtually indestructible’?’ said Clive.

Oops. Amanda hadn’t told anyone what Professor Also had divulged during the summer—that it was almost impossible to destroy the book. She had said something about it being vulnerable to explosion, though, or was it fire?

“Oh, uh, well, Professor Also kind of told me that it was,” she said. No sense in lying. Anyway, what was the big deal? Everyone knew about the book now.

“Awesome!” said Clive. “So that means it’s intact somewhere. And based on the fact that you found this page, I’d venture to say that Moriarty doesn’t have it after all.”

He had a point. There was a lot of reason for hope now. Amanda wished she could tell Thrillkill. He’d be so pleased.

“Of course the question now is, why are the peacocks so attracted to it?” said Clive. “Do they eat plastic or something? Whoa, I’ve got the most amazing idea.” He grinned at her wide, then wider, then still wider.

Amanda couldn’t imagine what he was thinking. Surely he wasn’t going to propose that they feed the peacocks a bit of the page. That would be a terrible idea for all sorts of reasons. What else could he be thinking? And then it hit her.

“You don’t mean . . .”

He laughed diabolically. “I do!”

Ugh. It was a disgusting idea. “Do we have to?”

“You don’t, but wouldn’t you like to get the credit?”

“Not if it means pawing through poop I wouldn’t,” she said.

“Aw come on, Amanda,” said Clive. “We’re scientists. We do what’s necessary to solve problems.”

“Maybe you’re a scientist,” she said. “I’m a detective.”

“Fine,” he said. “I’ll do it.”

“No!” she said, diving into the rubbish to find that piece of poop she’d pulled out of her hair. Where was it now? Rummage, rummage, crinkle. “Ta da!” She held up the discarded poop in triumph. No sooner had she done that than Binnie walked in again.

“Eeeew,” she said. “What are you two doing? Is that feces?”

“Uh . . .” said Clive.

It took Amanda about a split second to realize that this was a great opportunity.

“Binnie!” she said enthusiastically. “You’re just in time. We’re about to do an important experiment and we could use a helper. Are you up for it?”

This didn’t seem to be what Binnie had expected when she’d entered the room because she looked at Amanda, then Clive, then hesitated, then said, “Well, I, uh . . .” then looked at Clive again and said, “Uh, sure.”

“Wonderful,” said Amanda. “We need to analyze this peacock poop.”

Binnie grimaced, then looked at Clive again and said, “Okaaay. Uh, what do you want me to do?”

“Well, we were thinking—” said Amanda, but Clive could take no more of it.

“We need someone to document our experiment,” he said generously.

“Oh, that,” said Binnie. “Of course. What do you need?” She looked immensely relieved.

“Here,” said Amanda, handing Binnie her camera. “If you could just record us, that would be great.”

Binnie took the camera and flashed a grin at Clive, who smiled shyly. Then, seemingly realizing that she’d forgotten something, she smiled at Amanda too. “Glad to,” she said. The girl was so obvious.

Amanda Lester and the Blue Peacocks’ Secret Silver Dirk excerpt:

And then the moment came. The crew had broken through the tunnel wall and there was indeed empty space on the other side. As head of the dig Liam got to be the first to look inside.

Normally academics tend to be cautious, and Liam never liked to get ahead of himself. But in this instance he was visibly excited and moved quickly. Amanda could see that he was breathing faster than usual and trying to suppress a grin. The way he was clamping his mouth shut made him look like he was sucking on a lemon. Of course it didn’t help that Twinkle kept hovering in a very Lila sort of way, attempting to give him advice that he didn’t need and could not possibly want. “Don’t you think this light would be better?” “You should really cover your nose and mouth in case there’s something noxious inside.” “Be sure to remember your first impression because that will make your article much more exciting.” Amanda thought she’d lose her lunch and stuffed a gingersnap into her mouth.

But Liam was nothing if not gracious. He simply smiled at Twinkle, said “Thank you,” and, mouth covered as procedure dictated, approached the opening. He turned on his light and was just about to shine it into the space when Amanda cried out.

“There it is. A huge red spider. Did you see that?”

Liam was so surprised that he dropped his light on his foot. “Ow!”

“Professor, are you all right?” screamed Twinkle. The screech caused Ivy to shriek, Nigel to bark, the archaeologists to rush to Liam’s side, Elbow Marconi and his crew to scamper to the opening and block it, Simon and Clive to bash into them, and Amanda to fall on her coccyx. The confusion and panic grew so swiftly that soon the only person who hadn’t run into about five other people was Darius, who just stood there with his camera on his shoulder capturing the entire incident.

Then Amanda saw it again—a blur of red whooshing past at breakneck speed.

“Simon!” she screamed. “There!”

Simon wrenched his neck around, mouthed “Ow,” and seemed to miss the spider entirely because he said, “What?”

“The spider!” Amanda yelled. “It was right there.” She pointed to a spot a few feet from where Simon was standing.

“I didn’t see it,” he said. “Clive, did you see anything?”

“Nope,” said Clive.

“What is wrong with all of you?” shouted Twinkle. “Can’t you see that the professor is hurt?”

“I’m not hurt,” said Liam. “I was just a bit startled.”

“Your foot,” said Twinkle. “You’re limping.”

“It’s just a muscle spasm,” said Liam. He flexed his foot and didn’t grimace at all. “Now, shall we get on with things?”

Everyone moved away (Amanda had to get up first, which was no easy task. Her butt hurt like crazy.), and Liam raised his light to the opening again. Amanda took her place next to Ivy, who had moved closer again, and whispered, “I saw it. It was a huge red spider.”

“I believe you,” said Ivy.

Liam peered into the hole, moving the light this way and that.

“See anything, Professor?” said Twinkle needlessly.

“Sh,” hissed Felix.

“You sh,” said Twinkle.

“Both of you sh,” said Liam. He stuck his head into the opening so that both head and light were on the other side and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a hidden room!”

The tunnel erupted in claps loud enough to bring down the ceiling, except that they didn’t.

“Woo hoo!” yelled Twinkle loud enough to raise the dead.

“Yes!” shouted Simon loud enough to break Amanda’s left eardrum.

“Arf, arf!” barked Nigel loud enough to echo off the walls and cause people’s chest cavities to reverberate.

Darius moved in as close as he could without getting in Liam’s way. He winked at Amanda. She smiled.

“What do you see, Dad?” said Ivy.

Everyone stopped yelling.

“Well, um, uh, dirt,” said Liam.

“What color?” said Twinkle.

“How much?” said Louie.

“I’ll get a brush,” said Felix.

“Hold your horses, all of you,” said Liam. “Procedure, remember?” He snapped his fingers. The chamber was still.

Then Twinkle whispered loudly, “I’ll get the log.”

Louie said, “I’ve got the camera.”

“Tape measure,” said Felix.

“That’s what I like to see,” said Liam. “Mr. Marconi,” he nodded to Elbow. “Gentlemen,” to the construction crew. “Thank you for your excellent work, as usual.” Elbow and his men nodded back. “Take a gander?”

The construction crew approached the opening shyly, which made quite a contrast with their earlier bumptiousness. From the back they looked almost reverent.

“What’s that over there?” said Elbow loudly, after he had stuck his head through the opening.

“What are you referring to?” said Liam.

“I see something silver,” said Elbow.

“A coin, perhaps?” said Liam.

“I don’t think so,” said Elbow. “It’s pointy.”

“May I?” said Liam, taking Elbow’s place. Twinkle passed him a spotlight and he held it high, then lowered it and shined it this way and that.

“Well?” said Twinkle.

“Hush,” said Louie. Twinkle gave him a dirty look.

“By golly you’re right, Mr. Marconi,” said Liam. “It is indeed pointy. It looks like we’ve got ourselves a silver dirk.”

Amanda Lester and the Pink Sugar Conspiracy

Earlier books in the series:

Amanda Lester and the Pink Sugar Conspiracy (Amanda Lester, Detective #1)

by Paula Berinstein

Genre: Mystery/ Detective/ Fantasy

Age category: Middle Grade

Release Date: May, 2015

Blurb:

A reluctant detective, a criminal mastermind, and . . . sugar?

Amanda Lester wouldn’t be caught dead going into the family business. Her ancestor, Sherlock Holmes’s colleague Inspector G. Lestrade, is a twit. Nevertheless her parents refuse to see his flaws, and she’s going to a secret English school for the descendants of famous detectives whether she likes it or not.

When Amanda arrives at the dreaded school, she considers running away—until she and her new friends discover blood and weird pink substances in odd places. At first they’re not sure whether these seeming clues mean anything, but when Amanda’s father disappears and the cook is found dead with her head in a bag of sugar, they’re certain that crimes are taking place.

Now Amanda must embrace her destiny and uncover the truth. The only snag is that arch-villain Blixus Moriarty, a descendant of Holmes’s nemesis Professor James Moriarty, might be involved, and he doesn’t like nosy little girls interfering in his business.

Amanda Lester and the Pink Sugar Conspiracy mystique excerpt:

The first class the next morning was History of Detectives. The classroom was huge and paneled in dark wood. Amanda thought it was beautiful but was thankful she didn’t have to polish it. It would take so long that as soon as she’d finished she’d have to start all over. The room felt old-fashioned but it was a lot nicer than the classrooms at Ysidro Middle School, which were so depressing that she was always mentally redecorating them.

“Bienvenido!” said the teacher, Professor Also, an athletic-looking, curly-haired woman with a kind face and a wavery voice. The students, some of whom appeared bright and eager and others of whom seemed not to have slept the night before, looked around blankly.

“Oh, sorry. Forgive me,” the teacher said. “I just got back from Costa Rica and I haven’t got my land legs yet. That means ‘Welcome.’ May I have a volunteer, please? How about you, Mr. Binkle?”

The goofy-looking boy with the glasses, late of the vomit incident, pointed to himself. “Me, your honor?”

“Yes, you, Mr. Binkle, and I am not your honor. Professor Also will do.”

“Yes, sir, er, your ladyship,” said the boy, every bit as awkward as Amanda thought he was.

Professor Also sighed. “Now would be a good time.”

“Right,” said the boy, and raced to the front, tripping over nothing twice on his way to the spot where Professor Also was pointing. Amanda felt sorry for him.

“Now, Mr. Simon Binkle,” said the teacher. “I want you to select from these items and give yourself a semblance of a detective’s mystique.”

“A what, ma’am?” said the boy.

“A detective’s mystique. Go on. Let’s see what you can put together.”

Mr. Simon Binkle had turned rather red. “I’m sorry. I don’t understand, ma’am.”

“This, class, is exactly the problem for those of us who are new to the detective’s world. In order to be a great sleuth, you must develop a mystique. All the classic detectives have one and we will study them. A mystique sets you apart, and may I say, gives you a certain, I don’t know. Let’s say cachet.”

“Sorry, Professor. What’s cachet?”

“Cachet, Mr. Binkle, is that special something, an almost magical quality, that makes you fascinating.” The idea of the gangly Mr. Binkle being fascinating made Amanda want to laugh.

“Do you mean that we all have to be fascinating?” said Simon Binkle.

“Eventually,” said the teacher, at which the boy’s face went completely white.

“I see I’ve thrown you. Let me reassure you that developing a mystique isn’t nearly as intimidating a procedure as it sounds. This will occur naturally over the course of your time here at Legatum. Let’s talk about it a bit. Yes, Mr. Wiffle.” She pointed toward a pale, redheaded boy who was raising his hand excitedly.

“First, Professor, let me say that I’m very impressed that you already know all of our names. I think I’m going to enjoy your class. Second, can you tell us whether mystiques will be on the tests?”

Amanda looked over at Amphora, who was making a gagging face. When she saw Amanda looking at her she mouthed, “Do you believe this?” Amanda rolled her eyes, then grinned and shook her head. When she caught sight of Nick, who was sitting at the end of her row, she could see that he was laughing silently.

“I’m tempted not to answer that, Mr. Wiffle. A detective should be ready for anything. However, as this is your first day I will make an exception. No. Mystiques will not be on the tests but they will be part of your grade. Let me say right now that I will know if you’re faking a mystique. It’s perfectly acceptable to experiment, and in fact we expect you to do so. However do not try to impress us. A mystique evolves naturally. Trying to be something you’re not will get you nowhere and could actually backfire. Are we clear?”

“Yes, Professor,” said Mr. Wiffle. Amanda, Amphora, Nick, and Ivy were all stifling laughs. Simon, who was still standing in front of the class, seemed completely lost.

“Now, let’s talk about mystiques, shall we?” said Professor Also. “A mystique is much more than appearance, although that plays a large part because it’s what we see. It also has to do with the way the detective thinks and what he or she is most interested in. In other words, it’s what makes the detective different from other detectives.

“For example, we’re all familiar with Sherlock Holmes’s recognizable clothing and accoutrements, but what really defined his mystique was his keen ability to observe small details and draw conclusions from them.” Amanda winced. Who cared what Sherlock Holmes did or didn’t do? “But his observational skills didn’t operate in a vacuum. They depended on his arcane knowledge. As you know, he could deduce an astounding amount about a person just by observing his or her clothes, but in order to do that he had to familiarize himself with everything from buttons to types of wool. So his mystique depended on his knowing a great deal about obscure subjects. Yes, Mr. Wiffle.”

Not him again. Amanda was beginning to get the measure of this kid. She decided that staying away from him would be a good idea.

“Professor, will we be expected to study buttons and things like that?”

“Yes, Mr. Wiffle. Professor Sidebotham will be at your side for these six years, and by the time you graduate you will know more about buttons, fountain pens, and motor oil than 99.999% of the people on the planet.”

The kid’s mouth dropped. He obviously wasn’t happy. Amanda didn’t want to learn about buttons either, but she thought she could put up with it if it meant she got to watch him squirm.

“Mr. Wiffle,” said the teacher. “Do I infer correctly that you’re not interested in buttons and motor oil?”

The class laughed and the kid went as red as his hair.

“No, Professor Also,” he said, catching himself. “I’m quite looking forward to learning about motor oil. It sounds fascinating.”

The teacher gave the kid a look and said, “Indeed. Now, let’s continue with our discussion of mystiques. As I was saying, when you matriculate you will have developed a mystique that is unique to you. A unique mystique, if you will.”

There were giggles around the room until Professor Also fixed the class with a stony stare.

A Shot of Bourbon Excerpts:

LUKE

My lungs burned for a cigarette. I had one left that I’d been saving until I absolutely had to smoke it. I twirled the filter between my thumb and forefinger as I watched my brother fold a pair of gym shorts and slide them neatly into the duffle he’d packed.

“I put the cleats under the c-c-compression…you still listening to me?” Colly asked.

I nodded.

“The cleats are under the compression shorts. Y-you got some new T-shirts. We b-both did.”

“The Boosters was nice this year. T-shirts. How they ever gonna afford that?”

“Don’t start.” He tossed the new duffle bag at me. It smelled like tennis shoes and burnt plastic. The scent was a reminder that, even though the stuff inside the bag was new, it was all donated and cheap. Colly had been handed a five-hundred-dollar pre-paid credit card and told to take care of both of us for the year. We each played three sports.

The Boosters only used to buy us new stuff every other year after Mom died, but then Colly started showing them how good he was at football. I’m pretty sure they gave him the money to spend on himself. I was an unnecessary stipulation.

“You gotta s-sign the receipt,” he said, uncurling the folded piece of paper and sliding it across the desk.

“Why?”

“If you drop out or get kicked off the team, you gotta pay them back f-f-for your stuff.” His expression deadpanned.

Well now, that was a new condition.

I tucked the cigarette behind my ear and took the barely wrinkled receipt. Unfolding the straight edges, I stared down at it. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. “You didn’t sign it.”

“Yeah.” He licked his thumb and bent to wipe at something on his white tennis shoe. They weren’t new. They weren’t even gently used. But he’d just sent them through the washing machine a couple days ago. The less often they had to be washed the longer they’d last, and he needed white shoes for work.

“They trust you?”

He still didn’t look at me. He rubbed his temples with his middle finger and thumb. “Luke, just sign the damn p-p-paper.”

I barked out a laugh. I didn’t know what was funnier, that he was trying to tell me what to do, or that he stuttered his way through it. I scratched a sloppy signature at the bottom of the receipt. Not because those Booster people wanted me to, but because my brother had asked. Glancing up at him, I smiled. “They know I won’t pay ’em back though, right?”

Colly rolled his eyes. “I’m sure they know that.” Meticulously, he folded the receipt and put it into his pocket.

I laughed again. I Yanked off my faded blue Parker’s Garage uniform shirt and the white T-shirt underneath—at least, it used to be white. Unlike Colly’s shoes, this shirt had seen the underside of too many engines.

Thankfully, Colly had thought to get black and gray T-shirts this time. I tore open the duffle and then the package of shirts. “Those are f-for ball,” he said, but he didn’t press it because he knew I was gonna do what I wanted.

CHARLI

I waited while his fingers uncurled around the back of my neck. With the distant light, I could just make out the deep, thoughtful lines etching his face. He stared at me like he’d never really looked at me before, eyes dancing over my cheeks. I leaned into his touch.

Clearing his throat, he pulled away.

I sucked in a breath that wasn’t tinged with the heady smell of his bar soap and laundry detergent. Okay, as much as I’d wanted him to kiss me, or maybe profess his unwavering devotion to me, it was probably better this way. There was a small voice in the back of my mind that kept reminding me: Pandora’s Box. Box. Box. I could not let myself get distracted by his unbelievably attractive charm.

He’d already taken off, walking swiftly across the turf. “Please slow down and tell me what this is all about.”

He came to a stop again, this time at the top of a sandy pit. Lucas only stilled for a second before sitting on his bottom and sliding down. I’d been to this course a few times, and I was ninety-nine percent sure that wasn’t how you did it.

Then again, he did it so well…

He wiped his pants and held out his hands to me. “C’mon, Charli Chip, I won’t let nothing hurt ya.”

Making the wise decision, I walked fifteen feet around the small obstruction. It was either go around or inevitably hurt myself. There was no way I could slide with as much swagger as Lucas had.

He glanced at the clubhouse in the distance. Wiggling his brows playfully, he whispered, “We’re breaking in.”

I spun on one foot and started marching back to the car. “Have a good night, Lucas.”

Strong arms wrapped around my middle, and he tossed me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. My chest smacked against his back, and my legs slung forward, over his pecs. My chest heaved as I tried to catch my breath. “Put me down!”

“We’re breaking in,” he repeated, having the audacity to sound amused.
