Cover Reveal: Finding Kyler by Siobhan Davis

kyler-banner-coming-soon

Excerpt:

Their obscene wealth intimidates me.

Not the people.

The money.

The driver opens my uncle’s door first before attending to mine. James doesn’t make any move to exit. He looks contemplative. “I hope you’ll be happy here, Faye. Truly, I do.”

“Thank you. Me, too.” I hop out of the car as the driver retrieves my suitcase from the boot.

A splash of color in the corner of the garage captures my attention. Three racing motorbikes rest on an elevated platform. One is orange and blue and there is a multitude of brand logos on the side. The other two bikes are no less impressive. One is painted in a dark shade of green, the other bright yellow. A myriad of similar stickers decorates the side panels. I’m inexplicably drawn to them, and my feet move of their own accord.

Reaching out, I run the tip of my finger along the bodywork and up and down the wheels, my fingers dipping into the grooves in the tires. I can almost feel the enhanced adrenaline in the air. Motorbikes have always excited me, and the pure rush I’m getting is sending tingles of anticipation ricocheting all over my body.

I’m so entranced that I barely register the sound of approaching footsteps.

“Get your hands off my bike.” The deep male cadence verges on a predatory growl. The possessive quality to his voice isn’t lost on me either.

Giant goose bumps sprout on my arms, but I smother my fear and lift my head up in a confident manner. A red flush creeps up my chest and over my neck as a devastatingly good-looking boy reaches my side.

I’m tall—for a girl—and I’m usually pretty much on the level with most guys, but the top of my head barely reaches this dude’s chin, so he’s got to be at least six-two to my five-nine.

His body exudes warmth like a weapon. It crashes into me, almost knocking me off my feet. Slowly, my eyes travel up his body, taking in every ripped, lean, taut inch of him. He’s wearing dark navy jeans and a plain white shirt that’s molded to his perfectly chiseled abs like it’s painted on. I gulp.

They sure don’t grow them like this in Ireland.

My eyes continue their journey, up beyond the inviting, exposed strip of skin at the top of his shirt, and note voluptuous lips that are pinched tight, the light layer of dark stubble on his sculpted chin and cheeks, and the tan, smooth lines of his handsome face. I brace myself, rocking back on my heels, as I stare into stunning pale blue eyes. Framed by a thick layer of inky-black lashes most girls would kill for, his eyes are vast pools that I could easily drown in.

This guy is seriously good-looking, and he knows it, too. Crossing his arms over his chest, he pins me with a venomous look, and I shrink back from the dangerous vibes he’s emitting.

“Are you done drooling yet?”

Ella’s Twisted Senior Year

By Amy Sparling

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Age category: Young Adult

Release Date: May 31, 2016

Blurb:

Having spent most of her senior year flying under the radar, the last thing Ella Lockhart expected was to have a tornado rip straight through her house, leaving her homeless. It’s bad enough that the whole school now pities her, but did her parents have to let the neighbors take them in?

Now she’s sharing a house with Ethan Poe, her former best friend-turned-enemy. All those feelings she used to have for him are starting to rain down on her again. Too bad he’s a jerk and his new girlfriend has territorial issues. Thanks to Mother Nature, Ella’s house and her entire life have been turned upside down.

Ethan isn’t quite sure why Ella hates him so much, but he does know she wants nothing to do with him. He’s never quite gotten over the crush he had on her as a kid, and now that she’s living across the hall, it’s hard to stay away. His girlfriend isn’t helping the situation and when she shows her true colors, he doesn’t want to date her anymore. He wants to date someone like Ella. Too bad she hates him.

Amy author buttonExcerpts from Ella’s Twisted Senior Year:

Excerpt 1:

I look up and find the source of the stench came from the boy’s locker room. Ugh. I try to hold my breath as they file past, mostly ignoring the coach’s demands to pick a spot on the wall and sit down.

People shuffle in and around, talking and sharing images of the tornado that have already hit social media.

I bring my knees up and rest my hands on them, blowing out air to get my hair out of my face. I don’t exactly have a ton of friends at West Canyon High School and the ones I do have aren’t here.

A black and red Nike shoe steps on my purple chucks.

“Hey, sorry,” some guy says from way above me.

I look up and my sarcastic reply lodges in my throat. Ethan Poe stares back at me, his expression probably a mirror of my own. I mean how else do you look at someone who was you best friend until eighth grade and then became your sudden and absolute enemy?

Of course, I had the stupid crush on him, so maybe he’s not looking the same way that I am. Maybe his surprise is just that, not ten kinds of other emotions all rolled into one.

Like, we used to be best friends.

And, damn he got hot.

So hot.

“Ella, hi,” he says. His jaw muscles flex into what I guess is supposed to be a smile. “I didn’t mean to step on you, sorry.”

I shake my head to clear it of thoughts about his cuteness and the size of his biceps that pop out of his PE-issued tank top like they’re trophies on the display case. I fake a casual shrug. “No worries.”

He turns and kicks someone’s backpack away from me, sliding it down the hallway. “Mind if I sit here?” he asks, but he sinks down to the floor before I answer.

He smells like sweat and cinnamon and I hate that it’s kind of sexy. Ethan’s dark hair matches his eyes, in that both are perfect. He’s always smelled like cinnamon due to his obsession with Big Red gum.

I draw in a deep breath and look at my phone in my lap. April hasn’t texted back, but I can sure as hell pretend that I’m busy talking to someone.

Ethan nudges my shoulder with his elbow. “So what’s been up?”

I glance over and he grins, showing a set of perfectly aligned teeth that are so different from the crooked seventh grade smile he used to give me all the time. His skin has cleared up, his jawline filled out. He’s about twenty feet taller and although I pretend he doesn’t exist ever since the Embarrassing Nightmare in the Summer Before Eighth Grade, I know as well as everyone else that Ethan Poe is a popular jock now.

He’s not the same kid who was my best friend next door, the guy I crushed on like a maniac and the only one who knew all of my secrets.

As he stares at me, waiting for an answer to his simple question, I realize he doesn’t want to know any of that. He doesn’t care that my life fell apart after he had his friend tell me he thought I was a creepy stalker. He’d probably laugh if he knew how hard it was for me to make new friends in eighth grade when I’d spent my childhood only caring about him.

“Things are fine,” I say through a tight lipped smile.

Excerpt 2:

The rec room has also been through a renovation since I was last over here. There’s brand new brown leather couches behind a gorgeous blue and gray rug that’s so fluffy, I want to kick off my shoes and walk across it. There’s still a foosball table and Mr. Poe’s old Pacman arcade game in the corner. The TV has been replaced with a flat screen that’s mounted on the wall and it’s at least as long as I am tall. The other side of the room has the door to the small bathroom and the floor is covered in rubber mats instead of carpet. Various weight lifting equipment fills that corner, making Ethan’s own personal gym.

I imagine he must use the weights a lot, because a chest as filled out as his doesn’t just happen without dedication. Heat rushes to my cheeks. Will he be working out while I’m crashing in here?

“Here we are,” Ethan says, rising up from the mini fridge in the corner of the room. Above the fridge is his dad’s treasure: a framed Dallas Cowboy’s jersey signed by Troy Aikman.

Ethan holds up a bottle of vodka and two shot glasses. “Get over here,” he says, setting the glasses on a nearby end table. “Let’s toast to how freaking awkward this is.”

I walk over but I don’t reach for the shot glass. I give him a pointed look, stalling for time while my brain tries to figure out what’s happening here. “So you’re a drinker now?”

He throws his head back and downs the shot. “Nope. Not really.”

“Kind of seems like it,” I say with a snort as he pours himself another one.

He holds the other glass out to me. “You gonna let me drink alone?”

“I’m thinking about it,” I say, lifting the glass and holding it up eye level. “This is totally illegal, Ethan Poe.”

He shrugs. “I’ll be eighteen in two months.”

I down the shot in one gulp. “Still not legal.”

Ugh, the vodka burns my throat and stings my eyes. I try to act like it doesn’t affect me.

Ethan grins. “It’s legal in Europe.”

I shove my glass out to him, motioning for a refill. This stuff is gross but if it takes off the edge of being around my enemy, then I guess I’ll have to down another shot. “We’re not in Europe.”

“Ah, you’re just as snarky as I remember.” He takes my hand, holding the glass to keep it steady while he pours another shot. The feeling of his fingers over mine sends a jolt through my body that’s stronger than anything in his bottle of vodka. How is it possible to hate someone so much, yet still want them to like you?

Blurb:

A summer party is the last place Lydia Flowers wants to be. Beer pong? Stupid, foot-wrecking shoes? Random hookups? No thanks. Lydia would rather be in her cleats practicing her bat handling skills.

Enter Abe Fischer, the Nashville Teen Idol superstar. He’s a lip-syncing party animal with a short fuse; or at least that’s what the tabloids say. Except, Abe turns out to be nothing like the guy Lydia’s read about online. He’s sweet, and the way he talks to his horse…sigh.

Then life throws Lydia and Abe a curveball. They are wrongfully arrested for destruction of property. Their choices? Either work on the Fischer Farm for the summer earning nothing more than blisters and a sunburn, or have the arrest go on their records, which would ruin Lydia’s shot at a softball scholarship. It’s a no-brainer. Lydia picks up a pitchfork, pulls out the SPF 40, and prepares for the worst two months of her life.

When the press gets wind of a big secret Abe’s family has been keeping, things become even more complicated. Now Lydia has another choice to make: stick around for Abe’s messed-up life in the spotlight, or go for the scholarship of her dreams.

The Launch of Half Appy Press

Half Appy Press is a DBA for Jackie Anton and will include the adult works as J. M. Anton. HALF APPY PRESS SMALL LOGO The logo was designed by illustrator Sandy Shipley.   April is coming to a close and May is fast approaching. Five months into the 2015 marketing shake up and things are progressing at a slow but steady pace. It occurred to me at the beginning of March that if my books were going to get exposure it was up to me.

Marketing is a time consuming endeavor, which can also eat up your cash flow and strain your credit cards. Many years of supporting POD Publishers have set back my marketing efforts. Two years ago I joined IPBA and began researching the possibilities of publishing my own books.

The result is a total revamping of my business plan as an author. Having found myself in a constant state of dissatisfaction with the in-house designers and interior formatting to the point that the release dates were delayed while I spent valuable time hashing things out with these folks. At that point, I decided to spend my time and money using freelance formatters and designers.

Results of my collaborations with my illustrator, e-book formatter, book designers, and several editors were all positive experiences. Next step, I needed to find a good interior layout formatter. Still looking for that person who will hear or see the vision. Backyard Horse Tales 3: “Don’t Call Me Love” is the critical test. Loves tale, like the two previous books in the series will be a fully illustrated chapter book.

While searching for the interior designer I found an automated formatting service and used my rewrite of “Fateful Waters” as book one of the new “Trouble in Love-Land” series to test it out. The PDF is with Ingram Spark awaiting the completion of the cover template. I forwarded the template and the instructions to the book designer a few days ago. Below is the 2015 cover that will grace the book and is already live for the e-book. Fateful Waters 2015 FINALCoupon and direct e-book link: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/532509 Coupon code :LC78J Enter the code at checkout for a free copy, then pick your download. If you don’t have an e-reader, download the PDF to read on your computer. COUPON EXPIRES JUNE 30, 2015

All is much better on the financial end of things, since making the self-publishing move, and I should have more dollars to spend on promoting my books.   I hope the new book is ready to take with me to the Medina County Library’s Local Author Expo on May 9th. Please join us if you live in the area. I will be in the Children’s section, on the main floor. There will be 28 other authors at this event.

Book Marketing 2015 Style

It’s hard to believe that almost a month has past since my previous update: Marketing efforts for the year are off to a decent start. Uncharted Storms is finished and in print: The PR Campaign on the publisher’s end kicked off with this press release: http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/awardwinning-author-releases-new-collection-of-short-stories-400815.php

The 24-7 original press release has been picked up and distributed by media outlets around the US. I’ve only visited half of the sites at this posting, and my current list is slightly over one hundred. This is the first publisher that has had a marketing plan that included this as part of the book release without an extra charge.

“Uncharted Storms” the paperback is being offered at a pre-order discount thru February at an introductory discount. More information on this will be in a separate post.

Pre-orders are being taken at Valley Tack Shop, Inc, and customers can pick up their autographed copies and book mark the week before, or at, the annual midnight sale on March 27th. I am looking forward to visiting with all the great folks who have purchased my books at past midnight sale events.

Sharpening skills:

Marketing is not this writer’s preferred way to spend precious hours, which I would be much happier spending on writing or working with my horses. Marketing ranks up there with cleaning out the dog pen.
Not being Mrs. Money Bags, hiring someone else to do this isn’t going to happen in this life time. On February second I singed up for an intensive four week marketing course.

My project for Marketing 101 is “Cassandra: Night Shades.” This novel has been going through some growing pains and plot changes since it was originally conceived in late 2012.One of my homework assignments is to decide who my potential readers are and what will interest them in my book as opposed to thousands of other books offered in a genre.
Okay readers here is a chance to weigh in. The book trailer was linked in the previous post. Take a look at it on Youtube, or view it and some excerpts on my website. http://talesbyjackie.com.

Add your comments at the end of the post.

Did the trailer and excerpts intrigue you?

Are you a lady or a guy?

Demographic: Age 20-30, 31-49, 50 or over?

Do you own an e-reader? If so what price point attracts you?

Thanks for whatever help you can offer this struggling author in my attempt to get the word out.
