Sketches of My Soul (Sketches #1)

By TC Booth

Genre: Contemporary

Age category: Young Adult

Release Date: June 20, 2017

Blurb:

In the game of life, I was used to being on the losing team. The odds were stacked against me. Tegan’s Team—a mom who tried to control me, a dad who would rather drink then spend time being a father, a lying ex-boyfriend, and fake friends. Like any team however, you have that one shining star that stood out above the rest. For me that star was Emily, my best friend.

I guess life had pity on me the day it gave me a friend that always had my back. Life must have felt extra giving the day it gave me a cheer leader—Mrs. White, my next-door neighbor. She’d been more of a parent to me growing up then my own parents.

And then there was Andrew. He was my shooting star. One that I never saw coming. One that I hoped became mine over the summer of my senior year.

A glimpse into a crystal ball couldn’t have prepared me for that summer, though. The summer where a letter from my mom rocked me to the core. I felt the world shake with every word I read in that letter. By the time I reached the end, my world split wide open swallowing me whole.

Excerpt:

  Sketches of My Soul

A faint sound of music seeped in my window. The melody called me out of bed. I pushed aside the curtains to peer out into the darkness. Andrew sat on Mrs. White’s porch swing and strummed his guitar under the soft glow of the porch light. His lips moved in song, though I couldn’t hear his voice. The distant sound of the guitar was all I caught. The temptation to throw up the window to take in more sound felt strong, but the fear that he’d notice felt even stronger.

Crouched below the window frame, hidden by the wall-space between it and floor, I cracked the window as gently as I could. It felt so lame, spying on “the boy next door.” The smooth velvet voice that sang “All of Me” made my stalking worth it, though. With my back against the wall, I hugged my knees, closed my eyes, and soaked in the words.

When the music stopped, I strained to listen for any sign of movement. After a few minutes of silence, I decided it would be safe to stand up. With the window safely shut, I started to tug the curtain back in place and sucked in my breath at the sight of Andrew standing on the porch. His eyes locked with mine. He grinned and wiggled his fingers in a playful wave.

My fingers returned the wave instinctively. Then realization hit me—there I stood, in front of the window with my Winnie-the-Pooh nightshirt on.

I flung the curtains shut and jumped for my bed but missed and landed on the floor with a thud. My elbow and knees burned from the friction of my collision with the carpet.

“Tegan? Are you okay?” My mom yelled from the hallway outside my door.

“Yes. I just slipped. I’m fine.” I couldn’t believe he’d seen me. He probably thought I was such a loser—spying on him from my bedroom window with a Winnie-the-Pooh nightshirt on. Embarrassment poured over me in buckets painting me red. No way would I go to Mallory’s party now.

Princess Adele’s Dragon Preview

Chapter 1

Princess Adele’s face paled when she heard the words of her brother. Her large green eyes stared at his face as she spoke. “Robert, it’s inhuman. You can’t do that. If the child were yours, what would you be thinking?”

“Look, Adele, I didn’t come to this decision without doing a lot of soul-searching. Do you not think I haven’t run this through my mind a million times? I don’t know any other way to keep our kingdom safe from that monster. The counselor told me it’s worked in the past.”

“I don’t care what your mighty counselor said. You can’t do this. There must be another way.” Princess Adele turned from her brother, the King, leaving him standing in the room alone. Her plan must be executed before the full moon.

How such a monster threatens her beautiful home is almost too much to comprehend. If only Anthony was here. He’d know what would be needed to stop this unthinkable act. Tears rolled down Adele’s cheeks as she thought of her beloved Anthony. She enjoyed the world one day, deep in despair the next. What happened? Why did he leave?

The Princess recovered her emotions and resolved to come up with another plan besides sacrificing a beautiful child to the creature. There ought to be another way. Arriving at her bedchamber, her lady’s maid waited for her.

As Adele entered her room, Miranda bowed “Your Highness”, she said.

“How many times do I need to tell you, Miranda, you do not bow to me and call me “Your Highness” every time I enter the room when we’re alone. We’ve been like sisters since the age of four.”

“I know, Adele, but if I don’t do it all the time, I may forget. If I call you, Adele in public His Majesty’s ogre of a counselor will behead me or something worse.”

“What’s worse than having your head chopped off?” Adele asked.

“Made to marry a man I do not love.” Miranda helped the Princess change into her sleeping gown to make her ready for bed.

“Robert has tried to marry me off too many times to count. Six years ago, before we married, Anthony ran away for some reason. ”

“You don’t believe that any more than I do, Adele,” With a soft voice Miranda said, he loved you more than life, and it showed in everything word and action he made. Changing the subject, what did the King say?”

“He plans to go through with the sacrifice on the night of the full moon, which is in two weeks.” Princess Adele’s covered her face with her hands as tears began to flow. Her voice trembled as she spoke. “I can’t sit here and do nothing. A child sacrifice is unconscionable to me.”

“What can a girl of your small stature do against a dragon? Many Knights died fighting that dragon. I can see you dead before you even get to the lair.”

Princess Adele climbed into bed. “You know I can do anything a man can. She stifled a yawn then said “Goodnight, my dear friend. I hope you sleep well,”

***

Miranda blew out the wick of the oil lamp and said, “Goodnight, Adele.” She turned with a big smile on her face and walked to the door to her room. I know what she’s going to do, and as soon as her death is confirmed, I’ll console the King. I’m in a fantastic position now to put our plan into action. I will be Queen of Valdoria! She smiled as she blew out the light and settled into her bed.

The door to Miranda’s room opened and closed without making a sound. She heard footsteps padding across the room. “Hello, my love,” Miranda whispered as she joyfully fell into a pair of strong arms.

***

She walked down the aisle to her beloved, Anthony. When she got close enough to take his hand, she slid backward, having to begin the journey down the aisle all over again. Adele experienced the same nightmare about her Anthony when she fell into a deep sleep. Tossing and turning, Princess Adele unable to sleep any longer, sat up in the bed. In the blackness of her room, she reached a decision. I know what I must do.

Without stars, the night sky displayed no brightness, only blackness as pitch. Adele hurried as she dressed in the boy’s clothes hidden in the straw of her mattress. Her secrets remained her own. Her adventures out of the castle before the sun came up, on many occasions, was known only to her. This adventure would be no different.

Her father made sure both of his children received the same education which she gave thanks for many times. She could fight with a sword and ride a horse as well as her brother. She bested her brother in their formal schooling. He wanted to play instead of educating himself. Robert began to apply himself to his education not long before their parent’s death. Adele’s impressive capabilities were known only to Robert. Her father wanted her skills kept a secret for the purpose of a surprise if she needed it. If something happened to her brother, Adele could run the kingdom.

If her quest failed, she would no longer be alive, and her brother would be alone. He would be the only one of the family left. Her parents, the King, and Queen died the previous year from the plague. She and her brother left the area until the crisis passed.

They returned home having no parents and the country, no King and Queen. Her nineteen-year-old brother became King and Lord Ashmore guided the new King in all decisions. They relied on Lord Ashmore as their father did, over the years.

***

In an inconspicuous manner, Adele walked down the long castle hallway to the secret exit that took her underground, straightway to the stables. She thought once again of her father and how he made sure she knew the secret entrance location. He told her no one knew about it except her, but if the need arose she could share it with her brother. So far, it remained her secret way out of the castle.

She lit a torch before entering the tunnel. She didn’t like the darkness of the tunnel. The dampness didn’t bother her at all, and it felt refreshing when the outside temperature got high.

The trap door opening in the stable storage room remained well hidden. She checked it every evening, so it remained unobstructed. At the bottom of the ladder, she pulled her sword from its storage area. She carried it as she climbed the ladder to the storage room.

After covering the floor with the rug to hide the entry, she made her way to Champion’s stall. “Hello, my darling. Are you ready for a ride?” The stable hand saddled the horse. She put the mufflers on Champion’s hooves so he wouldn’t make any noise walking across the stones. Adele waited for the guards to walk to the other side of the parapet so she could escape the castle grounds unseen. She didn’t wait long. When she felt it safe, she carefully walked Champion out the gate to the open field. Once on his back, she gave the horse his head and let him run across the field to the timber edge.

Blurb:

Having spent most of her senior year flying under the radar, the last thing Ella Lockhart expected was to have a tornado rip straight through her house, leaving her homeless. It’s bad enough that the whole school now pities her, but did her parents have to let the neighbors take them in?

Now she’s sharing a house with Ethan Poe, her former best friend-turned-enemy. All those feelings she used to have for him are starting to rain down on her again. Too bad he’s a jerk and his new girlfriend has territorial issues. Thanks to Mother Nature, Ella’s house and her entire life have been turned upside down.

Ethan isn’t quite sure why Ella hates him so much, but he does know she wants nothing to do with him. He’s never quite gotten over the crush he had on her as a kid, and now that she’s living across the hall, it’s hard to stay away. His girlfriend isn’t helping the situation and when she shows her true colors, he doesn’t want to date her anymore. He wants to date someone like Ella. Too bad she hates him.

Amy author buttonExcerpts from Ella’s Twisted Senior Year:

Excerpt 1:

I look up and find the source of the stench came from the boy’s locker room. Ugh. I try to hold my breath as they file past, mostly ignoring the coach’s demands to pick a spot on the wall and sit down.

People shuffle in and around, talking and sharing images of the tornado that have already hit social media.

I bring my knees up and rest my hands on them, blowing out air to get my hair out of my face. I don’t exactly have a ton of friends at West Canyon High School and the ones I do have aren’t here.

A black and red Nike shoe steps on my purple chucks.

“Hey, sorry,” some guy says from way above me.

I look up and my sarcastic reply lodges in my throat. Ethan Poe stares back at me, his expression probably a mirror of my own. I mean how else do you look at someone who was you best friend until eighth grade and then became your sudden and absolute enemy?

Of course, I had the stupid crush on him, so maybe he’s not looking the same way that I am. Maybe his surprise is just that, not ten kinds of other emotions all rolled into one.

Like, we used to be best friends.

And, damn he got hot.

So hot.

“Ella, hi,” he says. His jaw muscles flex into what I guess is supposed to be a smile. “I didn’t mean to step on you, sorry.”

I shake my head to clear it of thoughts about his cuteness and the size of his biceps that pop out of his PE-issued tank top like they’re trophies on the display case. I fake a casual shrug. “No worries.”

He turns and kicks someone’s backpack away from me, sliding it down the hallway. “Mind if I sit here?” he asks, but he sinks down to the floor before I answer.

He smells like sweat and cinnamon and I hate that it’s kind of sexy. Ethan’s dark hair matches his eyes, in that both are perfect. He’s always smelled like cinnamon due to his obsession with Big Red gum.

I draw in a deep breath and look at my phone in my lap. April hasn’t texted back, but I can sure as hell pretend that I’m busy talking to someone.

Ethan nudges my shoulder with his elbow. “So what’s been up?”

I glance over and he grins, showing a set of perfectly aligned teeth that are so different from the crooked seventh grade smile he used to give me all the time. His skin has cleared up, his jawline filled out. He’s about twenty feet taller and although I pretend he doesn’t exist ever since the Embarrassing Nightmare in the Summer Before Eighth Grade, I know as well as everyone else that Ethan Poe is a popular jock now.

He’s not the same kid who was my best friend next door, the guy I crushed on like a maniac and the only one who knew all of my secrets.

As he stares at me, waiting for an answer to his simple question, I realize he doesn’t want to know any of that. He doesn’t care that my life fell apart after he had his friend tell me he thought I was a creepy stalker. He’d probably laugh if he knew how hard it was for me to make new friends in eighth grade when I’d spent my childhood only caring about him.

“Things are fine,” I say through a tight lipped smile.

Excerpt 2:

The rec room has also been through a renovation since I was last over here. There’s brand new brown leather couches behind a gorgeous blue and gray rug that’s so fluffy, I want to kick off my shoes and walk across it. There’s still a foosball table and Mr. Poe’s old Pacman arcade game in the corner. The TV has been replaced with a flat screen that’s mounted on the wall and it’s at least as long as I am tall. The other side of the room has the door to the small bathroom and the floor is covered in rubber mats instead of carpet. Various weight lifting equipment fills that corner, making Ethan’s own personal gym.

I imagine he must use the weights a lot, because a chest as filled out as his doesn’t just happen without dedication. Heat rushes to my cheeks. Will he be working out while I’m crashing in here?

“Here we are,” Ethan says, rising up from the mini fridge in the corner of the room. Above the fridge is his dad’s treasure: a framed Dallas Cowboy’s jersey signed by Troy Aikman.

Ethan holds up a bottle of vodka and two shot glasses. “Get over here,” he says, setting the glasses on a nearby end table. “Let’s toast to how freaking awkward this is.”

I walk over but I don’t reach for the shot glass. I give him a pointed look, stalling for time while my brain tries to figure out what’s happening here. “So you’re a drinker now?”

He throws his head back and downs the shot. “Nope. Not really.”

“Kind of seems like it,” I say with a snort as he pours himself another one.

He holds the other glass out to me. “You gonna let me drink alone?”

“I’m thinking about it,” I say, lifting the glass and holding it up eye level. “This is totally illegal, Ethan Poe.”

He shrugs. “I’ll be eighteen in two months.”

I down the shot in one gulp. “Still not legal.”

Ugh, the vodka burns my throat and stings my eyes. I try to act like it doesn’t affect me.

Ethan grins. “It’s legal in Europe.”

I shove my glass out to him, motioning for a refill. This stuff is gross but if it takes off the edge of being around my enemy, then I guess I’ll have to down another shot. “We’re not in Europe.”

“Ah, you’re just as snarky as I remember.” He takes my hand, holding the glass to keep it steady while he pours another shot. The feeling of his fingers over mine sends a jolt through my body that’s stronger than anything in his bottle of vodka. How is it possible to hate someone so much, yet still want them to like you?

Landry in Like… Author Interview

Krysten Lindsay Hager

KRYSTEN LINDSAY HAGER

INTERVIEW:

Who is your favorite author?

  1. Scott Fitzgerald is my favorite. I had to read The Great Gatsby twice in school, but I didn’t connect to it until I was an adult and then I fell in love with it.

How do you describe your writing style?

I always write with humor and my main characters wear their hearts on their sleeves. My two teen series both deal with self-esteem, growing up/coming of age, and first love.

Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your book?

Landry in Like will take you back to your school days and make you laugh and feel for her as she grows up and navigates through school. There are funny moments, cringe worthy moments, and life lessons on how to deal with everything from frenemies, first loves, anxiety, and friendships.

If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?

I would choose Hadley from Next Door to a Star (Star Series: Book One) because when she moves to a beach town, she has the chance to reinvent herself and start over and that idea is very intriguing to me. Plus, she lives in Grand Haven, Michigan—a beautiful beach town.

What books have most influenced your life?

I read a biography of a YA author, Paula Danziger, years ago and it made me realize that writing young adult fiction was what I was meant to do. It was always something I wanted to do, but I never realized that all those awkward and difficult moments I went through in my teen years might have been setting me up to help another teen in the same situation down the road. That biography shaped my vision of what I wanted to do in life.

Excerpt from Landry in Like:

I wanted to call my friends and tell them about being on the talk show, but Mom said we had to be at the TV station super early — even before school started. She said I could text them, but I had to turn off my phone and go to bed.

“I’m waking you up at four a.m.,” she said. “You have to be there at five-thirty.”

“Can I just call Peyton and Ashanti? Please?”

“Fine, but you have five minutes and then that phone is mine and you’re in bed.”

I dialed Peyton, but her mom said she was in the shower. I told her mom about the show tomorrow and said my mom wouldn’t let me stay up any later to call Peyton back.

“How exciting! I will make sure Peyton knows, and I will be watching you tomorrow. Good luck, honey,” Mrs. Urich said.

I called Ashanti next and told her.

“Get out. Get. Out. No way. This is so exciting!”

“I’m so nervous. My stomach is already doing cartwheels. I can’t do one, but my stomach can. Seems unfair. What if I throw up before I go on? I did that right before I went on at the statewide Ingénue modeling competition in Detroit, and my mom had to give me a cough drop to cover up the smell.”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine, but… just in case, take a cough drop with you,” Ashanti said. “Good luck. You’ll be great and I’ll go set the DVR now.”

I hung up and sent a text to Vladi, India, Devon, Thalia, Tori, and Ericka, so no one would be mad and feel left out. Then I shut off my phone. Mom poked her head in the door to make sure I was in bed.

“Night, hon. Try to get some rest,” she said.

Easier said than done. I stared at my ceiling while thinking about all the things that could possibly go wrong tomorrow. Seeing as the show was on in the morning, I never got to watch it, so I had no idea what the set was like — did it have super high chairs and I’d struggle to get into them? And what if it had those higher stools that were kind of tippy and my rear overshot the seat and I fell off? Or what if the prep questions got lost and the interviewer asked me random things like my feelings on nuclear war or asked me about some foreign political leader who I had never heard of before, and I appeared stupid? Why did I say I’d do this? I tried to get comfortable and it felt like I had just dozed off when I felt my mom shaking my shoulder.

“Rise and shine, TV star,” she said.

Stop by tomorrow for a special post of the first two books in The Landry’s True Colors Series.

MY View on Veterans Day 2013

As a civilian survivor of the dark era of the Vietnam war this Veterans Day has set off reflections from my past. Generations have grown up since the days when we graduated from high school. Most of the blue collar boys that I grew up with went straight into the draft. I gave serious thought to enlisting, but my mom talked me out of it. It was her opinion that I would end up dishonorably discharged, or spend time behind bars. I guess it was a good thing God made me a girl. Mom pointed out my big character flaw. I have a real problem with authority. Issue me an order, and I’m likely to do the direct opposite or sound off in a not so lady like manner.

The flag draped coffins and lists of MIAs grew like a malignant cancer through our generation. That in and of its self was and is not different from previous wars, or wars fought since.

My dad fought in the Pacific during WW2, and again in Korea. Like the vets returning to day they were hailed as heroes and were given ticker tape parades. Dad suffered from PTSD, but in those days they called the severe cases battle shock or shell shock, and there was a stigma attached to asking for help. So, many just toughed it out. Another repeating thread throughout the generations of veterans is the lack of medical treatment and benefits promised upon entering the Armed Forces of the United States.

Many private groups have stepped up to help the returning vets of today where government has failed. Vets today have been redeployed over and over, but when they arrive home it is often to cheers and hugs. Not so the returning Vietnam vets, they were spat on, called baby killers, and worse.

Now, as the Nam survivors numbers dwindle, there is a push on to add faces to those who’s names are written on the wall. Time to honor the service and sacrifice, tell the stories of those we lost, so they won’t be forgotten. I have to wonder what the vets of my generation think of all this belated hoopla. Is it too little too late?

On the bright side, you can get a free meal at a number of franchise restaurants today. Of course you have to have a home or access to a TV to know this, and you have to prove that you are, or were a veteran. Participating restaurants are betting that you won’t come alone and will bring your loved ones.

I’m pleased that soldiers and returning vets are more appreciated than their Nam counterparts. Have a great day all you warriors past and present.

Wind River Refuge Cover 4613Excerpt:

Wind River Refuge by J.M. Anton

Garrett struggled to gain his feet and get his bearings. His back was on fire from the hot metal that penetrated his flack jacket. He summoned all his strength for one final push to reach the LZ. Dizzy and nauseous, reality faded, and then he heard the sound of chopper blades; they must have made it! The chopper began to pitch like a wild bronc. They’d been hit! He was struggling to land with minimal damage, and then he was rolling end over end off the side of the road near home. His body was being bounced around inside a large road vehicle, along with the body of his copilot; no, the driver of the vehicle. It didn’t make sense. He would try to figure it out later after he rested a bit longer.

He woke with the disorientation that had been plaguing his subconscious. He recognized the IV tubes, the catheters, and the insistent noise of the machines attached to his body. He closed his eyes and fought the panic closing in on him. Had he been hallucinating or dreaming of being home, of rebuilding the old place that his Grandfather had bequeathed him? Had he projected O’Malley into his home life; and Jax, did he invent her?

His heart rate escalated, and he was sweating profusely, so the nurse summoned his doctor. Though the nurse could not confirm that Mr. McBride had woken, Dr. Carter was sure he had, but almost had his wrist snapped while using a penlight to check pupil response. One second, the man was almost comatose, and the next, McBride’s right hand was clamped like a vise around his wrist and was exerting increasing pressure. “Drop it, or I’ll break your damn arm!”

Dr. Carter responded to the threat in the hoarse, menacing whisper and dropped the small light. It was obvious that his patient was disoriented and thought that he was a threat. “Mr. McBride, I’m Dr. Carter, and I was just checking your pupils.” He relaxed some of the pressure on the captured wrist. “You’ve been unconscious for several days.”

Reason returned to Garrett. It had only been a doctor with a penlight, not an enemy wielding a knife. Still, he wasn’t sure where he was, and he was not releasing the doctor until he had some questions answered. “Where am I?” It was taxing to talk, and the strength that he was exerting to hold on to the doctor was taking its toll.

“You’re in a hospital, Mr. McBride.” His patient sounded like he growled at him, and then tightened his hold again.

“In the States?”

“OH! Yes, yes we’re in Wyoming. Your family is down in the waiting room.” The grip loosened, but he didn’t let go.

“What’s the date?”

“August fourteenth, nineteen seventy -three.”

Garrett let out an audible sigh of relief, released the captured wrist, and faded from the conscious world. Very cautiously, Dr. Carter checked his pupil reaction again, and then checked the rest of his vital signs.
