Regret Comes in Every Color of the Rainbow

Based on Erin Lee’s novella, Her Name Was Sam, Freak is the story of Kelly and Morgan, the mother and sister of Sam Harris, in the aftermath of her suicide. Bullied for being brave enough to show her true colors to the world, Sam has been gone exactly one year and Kelly and Morgan are left to tackle the grief that comes with regret in her absence.

But Sam’s story is far from over…

Through the love of Willow, a teenager intent on standing up for her “Freak” best friend at all costs, Ryan is able to finally come out to family and friends. His transformation from ashamed to proud with Willow’s help gives new meaning to Sam’s story and how things could have been.

Excerpt:

Ryan

Am I a coward? Probably so. And that’s fine. I’ve been called a hell of a lot worse. Usually, it’s just Freak. That happens the most on the days I get too colorful for the assholes at Conant High School. Generally, I try to tone it down. God forbid a guy want to express himself. In a way, I blame myself for it. I guess stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. Had I just toned it down and not gone through that phase in middle school with the black nail polish and the leather spiked collar, they might not even know. I don’t speak with a lisp. I don’t walk any different than any other guy at school. And I sure as hell do my best to keep the dramatics down. Still, they know. And it’s fucked up. Because if I could be who I really am, I’d do all those things and so much more. I’d pay a million dollars for someone to truly explain what’s so bad about wanting to just be me? I just don’t get what’s so wrong with being the way that I am.

When I’m with Willow, that shit goes right out the door. She’s probably the only friend I have who knows the true me anymore. My parents swear we’ll get married some day and have two perfect blond haired, blue-eyed children – a boy and a girl. Of course, they won’t be gay. That would be too much for my mother to take. “Leave me some hope, Ryan. And take off those sneakers! No shoes in the house!” No, to Mom, perfect comes only when you fit into a pre-packaged mold. A boy should be strong and athletic. A girl should be pretty and pink, like Willow. “The perfect girl for you, Ryan. Be nice to her, Ryan. Someday, Ryan, you’ll see. I just have a feeling about her.” Gross. For starters, there is absolutely nothing about my best friend that I find attractive in any way other than platonic. Even her freckles scare me.

Besides, Willow has flaws. No one is perfect, Mom. If Willow was so perfect, she might understand why now isn’t the best time in the world to come out to my parents. It’s hard enough to get through the average school day. She’s the only one who will sit with me at lunch anymore. Most days, I feel guilty about it; no matter how much fun we have whispering at the head cheerleader who thinks she’s hotter than everyone else. If Willow was “the one” I’d also be able to tell her that her nagging’s getting old and, frankly, I’m sick of feeling alone. I know it’s ridiculous, but sometimes, I feel like if Willow really “got” me, she’d become gay too. (I know, I know better than anyone – it’s not a choice). Still, the silences between us are becoming more frequent and she doesn’t invite me over as much. No matter how hard she tries, she’s never going to get what it’s like to be the kid they call Freak. Sure, I appreciate that she stands up for me. But lately, I just wish she’d leave me alone. She’d be better off. Frankly, they would all be – if I was just gone… And all of this? It makes me a terrible guy. Because as much as I need her to just go away for both of our sakes, I can’t stand it when she’s gone. To be honest, I’m really afraid of what I might do if I was left entirely alone for too long. Sometimes, I have scary thoughts. Most of them start with Colby. Generally, they end with him too, at my funeral: The one place he wouldn’t be able to hurt me.

Because love comes in all shades too.

A summer party is the last place Lydia Flowers wants to be. Beer pong? Stupid, foot-wrecking shoes? Random hookups? No thanks. Lydia would rather be in her cleats practicing her bat handling skills.

Enter Abe Fischer, the Nashville Teen Idol superstar. He’s a lip-syncing party animal with a short fuse; or at least that’s what the tabloids say. Except, Abe turns out to be nothing like the guy Lydia’s read about online. He’s sweet, and the way he talks to his horse…sigh.

Then life throws Lydia and Abe a curveball. They are wrongfully arrested for destruction of property. Their choices? Either work on the Fischer Farm for the summer earning nothing more than blisters and a sunburn, or have the arrest go on their records, which would ruin Lydia’s shot at a softball scholarship. It’s a no-brainer. Lydia picks up a pitchfork, pulls out the SPF 40, and prepares for the worst two months of her life.

When the press gets wind of a big secret Abe’s family has been keeping, things become even more complicated. Now Lydia has another choice to make: stick around for Abe’s messed-up life in the spotlight, or go for the scholarship of her dreams.

BLURB:

Max Blizzard was like any other drone living in Earth’s realm until the arrival of his eighth birthday. On that day his imagination awoke and Max started thinking for himself. He was an outcast the moment he let people know about his imagination. That moment also unknowingly set forth a chain of events years in the making. By having imagination, Max had given Sir Dreadvent exactly what he wanted, a way into Camelot’s realm.

Now Max and his friends, Trudesile and Lester, must complete the quest that Max’s father, Merlin, set out for him years ago. They must find the Gem of Camelot to defend the realm from Sir Dreadvent’s and his sevesties. Their perilous journey will take them from the shores of Merlinia and the ship of Davy Jones to the fields of Avalon, in the hope that they can save Camelot, save Earth and save all the lost realms that have been consumed by Sir Dreadvent and his sevesties on their quest to remake the universe.

A tale about where your imagination can lead if you choose to follow it, with creatures large and small joining Max Blizzard on his journey. King Arthur, Oberon, Hercules, Apollo and other heroes of imagination believed to be myth will become truth as Max and his friends face the trials ahead. Let your imagination lead the way to Max Blizzard and The Gem of Camelot.

Cover_Max_Blizzard  EXCERPT:

“Young Mr. Blizzard, the objective is simple. The first to extinguish the flame of the other’s Camelot Candle wins. You are only limited by your own imagination.” King Arthur knew Max got the rules as he watched him nod, and sat back down alongside Pemestra and Lempilightess.

“Arthur, do you think it is wise throwing the boy in the deep end so soon? Vlad has been at this for years.” Pemestra did not want to see Max hurt or his spirit broken in his first outing.

“Merlin constantly surprised me. Let’s see what the boy can really do.”

Max stared down Vlad, trying to ignore all the prying eyes that were upon him. He waited for the match to begin, listening for a bell or something, and watched as Vlad begin to concentrate, knowing that there was no bell and that match had begun.

“I’ll make sure your first loss isn’t too painful, runt.” Vlad grinned and gripped his Camelot Candle; a huge fan appeared out of nowhere in front of him and began to blow. Before Max could do anything, his flame had been put out.

“I think that was the easiest and quickest match in history.” Vlad threw his arms in the air and the crowd cheered while Max stared at his blown-out Camelot Candle.

“Don’t let him get to you, dearie. The boy needs to be taught a lesson in humility. Shake it off and come out fighting,” Bandaid whispered, while lighting Max’s Camelot Candle again and then running back to the sidelines.

 HERE IS ANOTHER QUICK PEEK:

“The name is Davy Jones and I’ve been the keeper of Merlinia and the entrance to Davy Jones’s Locker for many years at Merlin’s request.” Davy Jones bowed, hoping he would get some recognition from his name.

“Davy Jones? Wasn’t he a pirate who stole everything he could get his hands on? At least that is what the stories tell,” Bandaid questioned, looking to Arthur for verification.

“I see my name precedes me.”

Lempilightess! Pemestra! Take him!” King Arthur ordered, having heard the stories of Davy Jones and not trusting him whatsoever.

Lempilightess and Pemestra readied their Camelot Candles as Dregg stood between them and Davy Jones.

Dregg not let you take little blob man.” Dregg clenched his huge fist and readied for a fight.

“Now now. There is no need for a fight. What is it with everyone not wanting to trust me? First those three kids and now you. All I did was what Merlin told me to do.”

“Wait! Kids? You’ve seen Max, Trudesile and Lester?” Bandaid waved for Lempilightess and Pemestra to halt their attack.

“Yeah, I’ve seen the supposed high and mighty trio. I wasn’t sure they were any better than the heroes I locked up. But when they stopped Titania, I became a believer.”

“So the dearies are okay?”

“I let them in Davy Jones’s Locker, so they could…” Davy Jones took a few steps closer to Bandaid and King Arthur and lowered his voice to a whisper, “Go after the Gem of Camelot.”

AuthorPicAUTHOR BIO:

Patrick Hatt can be found in the East Coast of Canada. He hates writing these things but doesn’t mind talking in the third person. He dabbles in a little of this and a little of that, not afraid to attempt something new.

He is owned by two cats, one of whom has his own blog, It’s Rhyme Time. Yeah a rhyming cat, who knew? He would be considered a both person when it comes to cats and dogs.

He is also quite the movie and TV buff. As you can probably tell does not take himself seriously and has more stuff in his head than is needed. Thus the novels as just one more form of release. Thanks for the visit and enjoy!

Interview with Irina Shapiro

abbeycover3

Welcome, Irina, tell us a little about yourself that is not in your author bio.

The best way to get me to do something is to tell me that I can’t.  It’s like waving a red flag in front of a charging bull.  That gets me into trouble sometimes, but it also helps me broaden my horizons.  I wound up going parasailing to prove that I wasn’t scared despite being terrified of heights.  I did manage to open my eyes while I was up there and it was beautiful.

Someone also told me that I couldn’t possibly write a book.  So far I’ve written seven.  I hope no one dares me to sing.  That could have tragic consequences for all involved.

That is really funny! It’s strange what motivates some of us. When did you make the decision that you wanted to be a writer?

To be a writer was a childhood dream, but I never actually tried to pursue it.  I won an award for a story I wrote in High School and then didn’t write anything until I was thirty-six.

Tell our followers how you came up with the ideas for your novels.

The ideas just pop into my head.  The idea for my Hands of Time Trilogy came about as I drove to the supermarket and heard a Katy Perry song.  She kept repeating, “in another life,” and I thought, “Hmm, what would I do if I found myself in another life?”

Once the idea for a story has formed, does it take a lot of research?

I’m actually a treasure trove of historical information, so I mostly verify my facts, not so much research them.

Irina, you mentioned that you have written seven books.  Do you have a favorite?

My favorite novel is The Hands of Time.

What about “The Hands of Time” that makes it your favorite piece of work?

I’ve always been fascinated with the concept of time travel, so it was fun to explore what it would be like to find myself in a different century without actually leaving home.

Is this a single novel, or is there a sequel?

I’ve just finished the third book in the Hands of Time Trilogy. It’s with my editor right now.

Will you share with us what you are currently working on?

I’m thinking of the next book.  I have some ideas, but I still need to develop them.

Thank you for sharing with us. I am looking forward to reading your Hands of Time Trilogy.  Will you leave our readers with an excerpt from your story before you go to the next stop on your blog tour?

Excerpt

By Irina Shapiro

Several canvases were stacked against the wall of the studio covered with dust sheets.  Louisa pulled off the sheet of the one closest to her, and her heart nearly stopped in her chest.  Looking straight at her was Valerie, dressed in an elaborate gown, her dark curls piled high on her head and secured by pearl-studded pins, a large sapphire glittering at her throat.   The woman didn’t look modern, but there was no doubt in Louisa’s mind that she was looking at a portrait of her sister.  She closed her eyes, took a couple of deep breaths, and opened them again.  She was still there, smiling serenely, looking exactly as she had when she was alive.  Lou had come to accept that Valerie was dead, but now she wasn’t so sure.  Could it be possible that she had dressed in this gown and posed for a modern painter?  She went to the door and called for Billie to come into the storage room.

“Do we have names to go with these portraits?”  She tried to sound casual, but her heart was leaping out of her chest and her hands were shaking badly.  Billie consulted the list in her hand and read off:

“Mrs. Valerie Crane Whitfield, 1608, Oil on Canvas.”

Louisa felt the world tilt around her as she slid to the floor, welcoming the darkness that enveloped her.
